Green, a lifelong atheist who found that most outspoken atheists erred seriously in their understanding of the function and value of religious practice in building community, inculcating values and gratitude, and otherwise enriching a human life.

After years of practicing rituals and observances with his local Pagan community and exploring how religious behavior serves the imperatives of various parts of the human brain, Green developed for himself what is now called Atheopaganism. It is a supernatural-free religious tradition of celebrations, observances, meditations and other meaningful practices, the goal of which is to increase happiness both individually and in society, and to foster the development of a more sustainable, just and kind world. It is, in short, a path of meaning, celebration and service.

To his surprise, upon publication of his path, first hundreds, and then thousands of interested people joined him in revering the Sacred Earth, embracing the Atheopagan Principles and values, celebrating the holidays of the Atheopagan “Wheel of the Year”, and helping to shape the movement as it is today.
